Every quarter, someone has to pull fund performance, pick out the portfolio companies worth highlighting, write up what's actually material, and wrap it all with a bit of market context, then format the whole thing as something LPs can read. This skill produces that draft as a Word document per fund, ready for a final pass and your own closing note.
Setup
1. Download this Skill file: lp-update-drafter.skill
2. Upload it in Claude under Settings > Capabilities > Skills.
3. Nothing else to configure. Fund performance figures (TVPI, DPI, RVPI, IRR, capital called) come from structured fields Visible already tracks, no setup needed for those.
Running it
Tell Claude something like:
"Draft the Q3 LP update"
"Write our quarterly update for [fund]"
"Put together the LP letter"
Type the / command and find the skill
If you have more than one fund and don't say which, Claude asks rather than guessing. Default period is the most recently completed calendar quarter.
What it actually does
The instructions below are packaged into the skill file. You don't need them to use it, but here's what's happening under the hood.
Pulling fund performance. TVPI, DPI, RVPI, and IRR come directly from Visible's fund stats, no ambiguity there. A couple of things worth knowing: the IRR available is unrealized IRR specifically, if your LPs are used to seeing a realized or since-inception figure, that's a different number and Claude will flag it rather than presenting unrealized IRR as if it's the one they already expect.
Checking the numbers before they go in. Claude does a basic sanity check, TVPI should roughly match what capital called and fund value imply, net figures shouldn't exceed gross ones, and flags anything that looks like a data entry issue rather than drafting around it silently.
Choosing highlights and lowlights. Companies get selected based on real metric movement (growth, efficiency, runway extension), corroborated by a note where possible. Lowlights only make the cut if something's genuinely material, a clean quarter gets stated as a clean quarter, not padded with a manufactured concern.
Screening for what shouldn't go external. This is the one piece worth understanding well: portfolio notes are internal by nature, and this skill pulls from them for context. Before anything from a note makes it into the draft, Claude checks whether it's actually appropriate for an LP-facing document, a personnel matter, unannounced round terms, a customer name that reads like it's under NDA, anything litigation-adjacent, blunt internal commentary. If something sensitive is also the strongest supporting detail for a highlight or lowlight, Claude doesn't make that call alone, it flags it in the check-in below so you decide.
Checking in before finalizing. Before drafting, Claude tells you which companies it picked and why, so you can swap any out. Anything flagged as potentially sensitive shows up here too. Say "just draft it" up front and this step gets skipped, but the sensitivity flag still surfaces regardless.
Market context. A short, factual paragraph on current VC market conditions, pulled from a web search and written in Claude's own words, not lifted from any source.
What's in the document
One .docx per fund:
Header with fund name, quarter, and year
Fund performance table, current period vs. prior period where available
3-4 portfolio highlights
Material lowlights, only if there are any
Market context paragraph
A single placeholder for your closing commentary, everything else is fully drafted
Worth knowing
Reading from Visible is read-only. Generating the document doesn't need permission either, but this is a draft meant for a real human pass before it goes anywhere, not something meant to be sent as-is.
If data for a fund or company looks incomplete or stale, Claude says so plainly rather than quietly padding the draft with placeholders.
