Investment Data Hygiene (Claude Skill)

Find gaps and inconsistencies in your investment data, and fix them in Visible after you confirm.

Written by Nick Kramer

Investment data drifts. A round gets entered without a post-money, a purchase gets logged twice, a SAFE converts and nobody records it, and a mark from last year quietly carries forward. None of it is obvious until ownership shows blank or an LP report looks off.

This skill does the checking for you. Point it at your funds and it scans every investment, round, security, transaction, fair market value, and fully diluted share count, shows you exactly what looks wrong, and proposes a fix where the data supports one. Nothing changes in Visible until you confirm it.

Setup

  1. Download this Skill file: investment-data-hygiene.skill

  2. Upload it in Claude under Settings > Capabilities > Skills.

  3. Make sure the Visible MCP connector is connected in Claude. The skill reads your funds, companies, and investment data from Visible directly, so there's no mapping step.

  4. Optional: edit the Fund settings block at the top of the skill file before you upload it. This is where you tell the skill anything the data can't tell it on its own, like a fund that marks semi-annually, a fund that carries investments at cost until the next priced round, or a company you intentionally carry without a round. If you skip this, the skill assumes quarterly marks on calendar quarter ends.

Running it

Tell Claude something like:

  • "Run the investment hygiene check"

  • "Which investments need a mark?"

  • "Find gaps in our investment data"

  • "Clean up rounds for Fund II"

By default it scans every fund and every portfolio company. To narrow it down, just name what you want: "check investment data for Fund I" or "run the hygiene check on Acme and Northwind" both work. FMVs are checked against the most recent completed quarter end, so a run on October 22 checks marks as of September 30.

What it actually does

The instructions below are packaged into the skill file. You don't need them to use it, but here's what's happening under the hood.

Sorting by severity. Every issue gets one of two tiers. Critical means the gap breaks or distorts a number Visible reports to you or your LPs, like FMV, NAV, ownership, cost basis, multiples, or realized value, or the record is impossible (a purchase dated months before its round). Review means something is incomplete, stale, or unusual, but could be intentional or doesn't change reported numbers today. When it's borderline, Claude picks Review rather than overstating it.

Checking marks. For each active investment, Claude finds the latest fair market value. An investment with no FMV at all is Critical. One that hasn't been marked since before the most recent quarter is flagged for Review, with how many quarter ends it has missed. If you've told the skill a fund carries investments at cost, it skips the staleness flag and only calls out investments where the company has raised a new round since the last mark. Claude never suggests what a mark should be. That has to come from you.

Checking rounds. Claude looks for rounds missing a post-money, pre-money, or round size, and for rounds where pre-money plus round size doesn't add up to post-money (more than 1% off). If two of the three values are there, it proposes the third. It also flags rounds that look like placeholders or tests, rounds with no investments or securities, and rounds that look like duplicates of each other.

Checking round links. Equity and token investments should be linked to the round they were bought in, or ownership can't calculate. SAFEs, convertible notes, debt, and other security types are skipped here, since they often aren't tied to a priced round. If exactly one participating round falls within 30 days of the purchase and matches the currency, Claude proposes linking it. Otherwise it lists the candidates and lets you decide.

Checking dates. Claude compares purchases to their round, and exits, cash flows, and FMVs to the opening purchase. A purchase more than 30 days before its round is Critical. One that's 1 to 30 days early is Review, since multi-close rounds often carry the final close date. Anything dated in the future gets flagged too.

Checking shares and ownership. For equity and token investments, Claude checks that the purchase has shares, a price per share, and an amount that agree with each other. Small differences from rounding aren't flagged. It also checks that the company has a fully diluted share count on or before the as-of date, since ownership can't calculate without one, and flags when that count is older than the company's most recent round.

Checking SAFEs and notes. Claude flags SAFEs missing a valuation cap or SAFE type, SAFEs where the cap settings contradict each other, and convertible notes missing an interest rate or maturity date. It also flags notes and debt past maturity that are still active, and SAFEs or notes where the company has since raised a priced round, since that usually means a conversion hasn't been recorded yet.

Catching duplicates. Two investments in the same fund and security with the same date and amount double count your cost basis and FMV, so those are Critical. Near matches within 7 days, and repeated exits or cash flows, are flagged for Review.

Checking purchases and exits. A purchase with no amount breaks cost basis, multiples, and IRR, so it's Critical. On exits, Claude flags selling more shares than were bought, a full exit on an investment still marked active, and exits with no proceeds amount. An exit with zero proceeds is Review, since it may be an intentional write-off.

Proposing fixes. Claude only proposes a value when the data itself supports it, for example post-money from pre-money plus round size, or shares from amount divided by price. For anything else, like an FMV, a fully diluted share count, or SAFE terms, it tells you what it needs, and you can give it the value from your own records.

When it's done

Claude gives you a report in the chat with how many funds, companies, investments, rounds, and securities it scanned, and how many Critical and Review issues it found. Each issue is numbered and grouped by company, with a link to the company in Visible, the evidence behind it, whether it can be fixed from Claude or has to be fixed in the app, and a proposed fix if there is one. A short summary by check at the end shows where the problems cluster. If nothing turns up, it says so. A clean scan is a fine result.

From there you pick what to fix. Reply with "all," "all Critical," specific numbers, or your own values (for example an FMV from your latest valuation, or a post-money from the round docs). Claude repeats back exactly what it's going to change, field by field, then asks one more time whether to apply it in Visible. If you'd rather make the changes yourself, say no and it gives you a table to work from.

Once changes are applied, Claude lists what it changed with the old and new values, plus anything it couldn't apply and why. Since fixes like round links and fully diluted shares change ownership and FMV downstream, it's worth running the check again afterward to confirm everything cleared.

Worth knowing

  • The scan is read-only. Nothing in Visible changes until you confirm the fixes and then say yes to applying them.

  • Right before each change, Claude re-checks the record. If someone edited it in Visible since the scan, Claude skips that fix and tells you, so it never overwrites newer work.

  • Claude never deletes anything, including duplicate investments or test rounds. It points them out, and you have to remove them in the app.

  • Some records can't be edited through the connector, like conversions and the FMVs Visible creates automatically from purchases and exits. Claude flags those and tells you to fix them in the app.

  • This checks whether your records are complete and consistent with each other. It doesn't judge whether a valuation is right. A markup you chose to take isn't an issue here.

  • This runs when you ask for it. It doesn't run on a schedule, so if you want it every quarter after marks are in, you'll need to trigger it yourself or set up a recurring reminder.
