How to Add and Manage Investments

A walkthrough of Visible's Investments feature for tracking rounds, securities, FMVs, exits, and transactions for a portfolio company.

Written by Matt Preuss

Visible's Investments feature gives you a full, ongoing record of everything that happens with an investment in a portfolio company, from the initial round through fair market value updates, exits, and conversions, all in one place.

Please note that to utilize the Investments feature, you'll first create your funds. From there, you'll have the ability to begin creating new investments.

Step One: Navigate to Investments

To get started, navigate to a company's profile, then to Investments in the inner navigation, then to the Investments tab. Then, click + New investment.

Step Two: Adding an investment

Clicking + New Investment. This opens a side panel where you'll choose the security type you're purchasing. The suggested options at the top are Equity, SAFE, and Convertible Note.

Click the caret to see additional options, including Debt, Token, and Other.

Once you've chosen a security type, choose whether this is a New round, an Existing round, or No round (for example, if you're recording a SAFE that isn't tied to a priced round).

If you choose a new round, give it a name and a close date, then enter the round size, pre-money valuation, post-money valuation, and, if applicable, the number of fully diluted shares outstanding at the close of the round.

Step Three: Add the Security details

Next, choose whether you're purchasing a New security or an Existing security you've already added to this company's investments. If you choose New, Visible will suggest a name based on the round (for example, Seed), or you can enter a custom one.

Choose the equity type (Preferred or Common), the date, the currency, the price per share, and the number of authorized shares from the round.

Step Four: Add the Purchase details

Finally, choose the fund, the purchase date, the price per share, and the number of shares purchased. This will automatically update the amount invested below, or you can edit that field directly to enter a custom investment amount.

Click Save Investment to add it to the Investments tab.

Step Five: Viewing an investment's history

Once an investment is saved, you'll see it listed in the Investments tab along with a rolled-up summary for each fund: Total Invested, Latest Valuation, and Total Ownership.

To see a full historical record of everything that has happened to a specific investment, click Expand all, or click the caret next to an individual investment.

Step Six: Other actions available for an investment

Using the + icon at the investment level, you can also:

  • Add a fair market value (FMV) update

  • Add an exit (full or partial)

  • Add a cash flow, such as a dividend

Click the three dots next to an investment to Edit or Delete it. Editing will reopen the same side panel you used when creating it.

Step Seven: The Securities tab

When you add an investment, the underlying security is automatically created in the Securities tab. You can also edit a security directly from this tab, or click Add Security to create one on its own, choosing from Equity, SAFE, Convertible Note, Debt, Token, or Other.

If you add a security from this tab before you add the investment, it will show up as an existing option the next time you go through the Add Investment workflow.

Step Eight: The Rounds tab

Rounds you create while adding an investment will also appear in the Rounds tab. You can create a round directly from this tab as well, which is useful for tracking a round you didn't participate in.

Step Nine: The Transactions tab

The Transactions tab is a ledger of every event tied to the Investments, Securities, and Rounds tabs. You can edit an entry directly from this list view.

Step Ten: The Docs tab

The Docs tab uses Docs AI to pull relevant details out of investment deal documents. Click Import, add the file, and Visible will extract the relevant details for you. For more detail on the AI docs feature, check out the related articles below.

Together, these five tabs give you a complete, ongoing ledger of an investment, from the original round all the way through to its current state.
